20 January Weekly Garden Update

Greens

We picked some parsley and cilantro this week to make a lovely chimmichurri sauce.  We picked various greens for braising, lettuces (twice) for numerous salads, 3 small leeks, dill and even more cilantro, broccoli, and a cauliflower!

We must be having great broccoli growing weather for a change, because for the first time all of our plants have produced heads. Not large heads, but we’ll take what we can get. The cauliflower head growing has gotten larger in the past couple of weeks. It has a small frost-damaged spot or two but we’ll be able to cull those before we cook it.

On Thursday afternoon we went out to do the cover routine as 2-4 inches of snow was being forecast. We noticed that some of the snow peas and radishes have poked up above the soil! We covered them with leaves that we’ll clear away when it’s safe to do so.  We got probably that much snow overnight, but half of it melted as it landed, and by the time the ground got cold enough to hold it, we had less than an inch accumulation. It was pretty, but was 80% gone by late Friday afternoon.

All those lovely lettuces and greens! Our lettuce is ragged looking from recent cold snaps but the kales are fine (just a little cold stressed too but they hold up so much better). Oh to be enjoying fresh broccoli now too. Ours is memory at the moment and I never got enough to freeze surplus this past summer season so we are having to just do without for a while. Miss it alot.
